The Afterlife of Holly Chase by Cynthia Hand
Goodreads // Amazon
On Christmas Eve five years ago, Holly was visited by three ghosts who showed her how selfish and spoiled she'd become. They tried to convince her to mend her ways. She didn't. And then she died. Now she's stuck working for the top-secret company Project Scrooge--as the latest Ghost of Christmas Past. Every year, they save another miserly grouch. Every year, Holly stays frozen at seventeen while her family and friends go on living without her. So far, Holly's afterlife has been miserable. But this year, everything is about to change. . . .

The Afterlife of Holly Chase was a heartwarming modern YA retelling of Dickens's classic with a few twists, told in a story-time style with all the modern trimmings. This book was relatable and though Holly is a classic Scrooge, she's one you come to root for. The ending doesn't disappoint in the typical cheesy way. This book is a fun read for the holiday season.

The 12 Dares of Christa by Marissa Burt
Gooodreads // Amazon
Christa is a holiday junkie. What’s not to love? There’s decorations! Gifts! Caroling with friends! But thanks to her parents’ recent separation, Christa’s favorite time of year is now filled with heartache. And when her mom announces that she’s taking her on a mother-daughter trip to Europe over winter vacation, Christa knows she should be excited. She just can’t imagine spending the yuletide season without her dad. However, waiting at her hotel in Italy is a special package from her father: the first of twelve dares that take Christa to landmarks in three beautiful countries and introduce her to people who will show her that hope is alive in the strangest of places. Funny, genuine, and feel-good to the core, The 12 Dares of Christa is one fa-la-la-filled adventure that fans of Wendy Mass and Lisa Greenwald will love.

I had to choose this one because... my name! This Middle Grade read was a cute story. Christa has anxiety and comes to hate change after her parents divorce. She comes to embrace change more through the "12 dares" version of the annual Christmas scavenger hunt her dad sets up. Her adventures through Europe help her come to accept the new dynamic of her family and helps her grow as a person. This holiday story was short and sweet.
